Acts of Kindness With Social Distancing

During these challenging times full of doubt and sorrow, many people are really struggling. However, now is also one of the best times to show compassion towards others and make a difference in people’s lives. Below are a few ways that you can make a positive difference for others.

One of the easiest acts of kindness that you can do while social distancing is to reach out to others. Have a friend who is especially struggling with the quarantine? You can send them a funny meme, a motivational quote, or a simple message expressing your support for them. For a longer interaction, you can use the browser extension Netflix Party to sync your Netflix with your friends and watch movies and television with them. Even just a simple facetime or phone call can really brighten up a person’s day, so make sure those close to you are reminded that you can still be connected even in these troubling times.

Helping those in your household or neighborhood can offer a way to help others closer to home. Take up an extra household chore or make a cup of tea for someone you live with. You can try baking some cookies or cupcakes and drop some off at a neighbor’s house or, if you have any neighbors who may not be able to get out, ask them if you can get them anything during your next trip out. You can even make a poster with encouraging messages and images on it and post it in a window visible from the street so that everyone who walks by can have a touch of positivity in their day.

If you want your compassion to have an effect on a more widespread level and your financial circumstances allow you to do so, you can try donating to a cause you believe in. There are many different charities that are taking donations and, if you so desire, you can donate to one of the numerous charities and campaigns directly working to relieve those affected by COVID-19. On a more local level, the Mary Isaac’s Center is in need of gift card donations and takes direct donations through their website.

Lastly, make sure you are practicing self-kindness. It is easy to feel down, frustrated, and worried during these times, so make sure you treat yourself with compassion. Incorporate a walk into your daily routine, listen to your favorite music, or try something relaxing like meditation or yoga. Taking care of yourself will allow you to better show your kindness for others; it is hard to help others if you cannot keep a positive outlook yourself. Never underestimate the power of optimism, as just being happy yourself may rub off on those around you.

Whether you do one act of kindness or many, remember that every little bit helps make the world a better place in this extremely difficult and unprecedented situation. Through helping each other, we can make these circumstances much easier to get through and conquer.
