Cross Country Closes
With the beginning of the winter sports comes the end of fall sports like cross country. This co-ed running sport went out on a high note for both the girls and boys team when both brought home the 2018 pennant for the Vine Valley Athletic League. As the first year Vine Valley Athletic League cross country season, the team had a win streak and the awards to prove a successful season.
Despite their wins, many athletes were disappointed by the end of the season. The smoke from the Camp Fire in Butte County made it impossible for the athletes to practice for the last few weeks and eventually forced them to cancel league finals at Spring Lake. Many athletes missed their final chance to make a personal record or make varsity. Seniors missed their last chance to race at all. Freshmen missed their first experience to compete at the end of the season. At North Coast Section league finals, the boys raced in hazardous smoke conditions while the girls were sent home before they got the chance to race at all.
Through all these setbacks, the team remained positive, supportive, and refused to give up. When the day was too hot to practice in, they ran in the early morning. When the air was smoky, they practiced inside on treadmills. With each new obstacle, the team grew closer and the individual runners stronger.
