Schizophrenic Genes
Science Daily reported that researchers from the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics at Cardiff University (located in Wales) have discovered 50 new gene regions that are proven to enlarge the risk of developing schizophrenia. They also stated that the researchers “used state-of-the-art information about brain development to accurately pinpoint new genes and biological pathways implicated in this disorder.” Reported as the largest study regarding schizophrenia to ever occur, the researchers claim that the discovery of the new genes is a giant step towards improving and innovating the treatment of the disorder. One unexpected finding was that schizophrenia genes are mostly ones needed for normal development and generally do not contain dangerous mutations, which will also aid scientists in their investigation to find more information about the genetic causes of schizophrenia.
