Update: Trump’s First 100 Days

The first 100 days of a presidential term took on symbolic significance during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s administration, and the period is considered a benchmark date to measure the success of a president as they begin to address their agenda, and promises.

  1. Build a border wall, and make Mexico pay for it.

Trump: “I would build a great wall, and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me, and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great great wall on our southern border and I’ll have Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”

Status: Executive Order 13767 signed. No further action has been taken and construction has not begun.

  1. 30 day plan to defeat ISIS

Trump: “We are going to convene my top generals and give them a simple instruction. They will have 30 days to submit to the Oval Office a plan for soundly and quickly defeating ISIS.”

Status: The United States dropped the largest bomb on an ISIS target on April 13th. However, no single plan to bring about the end of ISIS has been talked about by Trump since inauguration.

  1.  Stop immigration from terrorist countries and ban Muslims from entering the United States.

Trump’s released statement: “Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on,”

Status: Two executive order signed by Donald Trump have been halted from enactment based on rulings of religious discrimination, and that the government had not provided reasonable evidence form banning the seven countries.

  1. Renegotiate or withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement and Trans-Pacific Partnership

Trump: “A Trump administration will renegotiate NAFTA and if we don’t get the deal we want, we will terminate NAFTA and get a much better deal for our workers and our companies. 100 percent.”

Status: via Trump’s Twitter account: “I received calls from the President of Mexico and the Prime Minister of Canada asking to renegotiate NAFTA rather than terminate. I agreed…subject to the fact that if we do not reach a fair deal for all, we will then terminate NAFTA. Relationships are good-deal very possible!”

  1. Repeal and replace the ACA (Obamacare)

Trump: “Obamacare. We’re going to repeal it, we’re going to replace it, get something great. Repeal it, replace it, get something great!”

Status: Trump’s first healthcare bill failed to even get voted on in the House, a second attempt has been postponed until after the 100 day mark.

  1. Cut taxes

Trump: “I’m cutting taxes by about the most.”

Status: A plan released by the administration outlines a basic tax cut plan, although it ofers few details including where the money would come from. Cutting business taxes from 35 to 15 percent, and decreasing the number of tax brackets to three. Corporations would also not be required to pay taxes on  foreign profits, however this contradicts the “America First” claims he has made.

  1. Take funding from Sanctuary Cities

Trump: “We will end the sanctuary cities that have resulted in so many needless deaths. Cities that refuse to cooperate with federal authorities will not receive taxpayer dollars, and we will work with Congress to pass legislation to protect those jurisdictions that do assist federal authorities.”

Status: Executive Order 13768 has been stopped on grounds that it is unconstitutional. By trying to commandeer state and local officials to enforce the federal immigration laws, trust with local police goes down, and so does the number of reported crime.
