Finally! It’s official, the entirety of Season 2 of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” has been released! The first two episodes of Season 2 aired on Disney+ on Dec. 10, and all eight episodes were released following then, week by week. These eight episodes showcase the journey of a group of young demigods searching to find The Golden Fleece, a magical entity that has healing properties, to help restore a sacred tree and save camp.

While Season 1 often leaned into explanation and expository details — such as explaining the gods, the rules of this new world, and Percy’s place in it — Season 2 starts to shift away from that foundation building approach. The story-telling becomes faster and more fluid, willing to trust that the audience already understands the universe, and the stakes that come with it. Instead of explaining the mythology like we see throughout scenes of Season 1, such as many of Sally – Percy’s mother – and Percy’s moments together, the show now uses it as a backdrop for high stakes decisions and consequences.
Additionally, this season visually expands the scale of the series significantly. While Season 1 was largely centered around introducing Camp-Half Blood and smaller mythological encounters, Season 2 leans into wider environments and more ambitious storytelling elements. Production design, such as on location filming, realistic set pieces, and even costume design play a distinct role as to why Season 2 feels so much more immersive and real for fans to watch. Many of the sets help to convey a theme of danger and uncertainty leading up to intense battles or choreographed action sequences. This shift makes the world of Percy Jackson feel less like a guided tour and more like you are living in the mythological landscape with the characters.

Not to mention the difference in fan responses from season 1 to season 2. After the first season was released on Disney+, many fans praised the faithfulness to the books themselves. Through direct scenes from the books brought to life on screen, to inside jokes, nicknames, and overall execution, the first season did not leave fans very disappointed. However, Season 2, by contrast, has been widely viewed as a turning point for show and book fans alike. Many fans have responded positively to the faster pacing and to the stronger emotional depth depicted through the developing relationships between the characters. Instead of watching characters become friends, now we see what happens when that friendship gets challenged, whether that means by rising internal conflict, or real physical threats. For example, when Annabeth was trying to protect Percy from The Great Prophecy by not telling him of his future, Percy saw this as avoidance and neglect. Because of situations like these, misunderstandings last longer, trust isn’t always automatic, and decisions don’t always line up accordingly.
However, some fans have been critical of the changes that the show has made to the storyline. Many important moments, such as Percy and Annabeth sharing a vulnerable moment in an underwater bubble after Annabeth’s encounter with The Sirens, were removed from the show, and this caused a fierce debate to spark amongst Percy Jackson fans. Many fans of the books are disappointed that the show is not staying as true to the source material as they had expected, and although these changes were made to improve the story, fans have remained critical.
Although the changes that were made to the show have brought forth some criticism, there have been various fans who have shown their support for the show despite this. Casa Student Chloe Herdman (11) said that ‘[She] enjoyed most of the changes that were made.”
Season 2 of “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” has garnered mixed reviews from fans; however, it has been an incredible success. The support has far outweighed the criticism, demonstrating that although the show has made changes to the original source material, it is still able to be successful because of the development that these changes have made to the story.
