Journalism is an incredible form of communication. It keeps the public informed on urgent issues at national and local level, makes the public smile with the lighthearted comic section, and helps the community meet the people who are making a positive impact around them. That said, one of the only shortcomings that newspapers have is the fact that for many, reading in English can be a challenge. This is the case for many of our students at Casa Grande, that’s why we decided to start a new section in Spanish in the Gaucho Gazette this year. We want the Gaucho Gazette to be the people’s newspaper.

This is the Gaucho Gazette, the Casa Grande newspaper, created by students for students. The students write all the articles, conduct all the interviews and do all the research. Our goal is to help students stay informed. We are interested in any issue that impacts the community here at Casa Grande. No news is too big or too small for us, we want to cover a wide variety of stories to please the public. In the newspaper, we touch upon such lighthearted and cheerful topics as the cheapest fast-food restaurants, but also such serious and controversial issues as President Trump’s suspension of DACA and its negative impact on the immigrant community. We want the Gaucho Gazette to help unite and inform our community.

Looking at the newspaper in more detail, we can see that it is made up of different sections, such as editorials, sports, student life, opinions and commentaries, news and international issues. One of the most anticipated sections of our newspaper is the last page: “Voice”. This section highlights some of the incredible stories of many of our students, whose stories would not be noticed if they did not appear on the Voice. For example, through the Voice we have met students who are facing or have faced great challenges in their lives, but contrary to allowing that challenge to hold them down, they have risen with greater strength.

One of the main reasons why I decided to join the Gaucho Gazette is not only because I’m passionate about journalism, but also because I want to give the opportunity for Spanish-speaking students to benefit from what the Gaucho Gazette offers. I want this school to be a community; a more united place where there are no restrictions, or reasons why we should limit ourselves. I want to give the opportunity to all the Spanish speakers in the school to have a voice. I do not want our students to miss the opportunity to see all the wonderful things that are happening here in Casa Grande and in Petaluma.

Our goal in the Gaucho Gazette is to help and inform the public, and we feel that adding a section written in Spanish would allow that. I would love for you to contact me with ideas or problems that you feel need more coverage or feel that it would be beneficial to have in Spanish. Similarly, if you have any questions or comments, do not hesitate to let me know. Language is the fiber that has the power to connect and unite all of humanity. Language helps us to communicate, to share ideas, to celebrate the interaction between friends, and simply to enjoy life! I hope that by writing articles in Spanish help us to make that a reality.
